Fluffy potatoes inside the baked potato

Why an air fryer for baked potatoes?

I get that question a lot of times. Since this may not be a very quick recipe unlike most of the others that takes 15 minutes or less in the air fryer. The larger potatoes may take 50 minutes also. So what's the benefit of using an air fryer and not the oven.

The answer is an air fryer is more energy-efficient and it cooks the food evenly from all directions. Though the time may not be very less for this recipe, just remember it takes approximately double the time in the oven.

Thanks to the even spread of the hot air, it makes the potatoes perfect and at the same time, it gives a nice crisp to the skin which is a plus for great baked potatoes.

And at the same time, the air fryer doesn't heat up the whole kitchen while cooking my potatoes. So I can make them in hot summers also.

My tip - For quick air fryer baked potatoes, choose the potatoes that are not very big in size. Rather the medium ones give more satisfying results too.

Ingredients you will need for baked potatoes

Potatoes - Baked potatoes can be made with any kind of potatoes. Starchy potatoes like Russet make the best fluffiest potatoes. However, any potato will do great for the recipe. Take similar size potatoes as the cooking time largely depends on the size and type of the potatoes.

Olive oil - Can substitute with melted butter or seasoned butter.

    Seasonings - Salt, pepper

I love to rub the seasonings all over the potato than just a sprinkle. For a garlic flavor add garlic powder to the olive oil and using a brush apply it or rub using fingers.

Toppings - butter, chives. Or any toppings of choice.

How to make air fryer baked potatoes?

They are incredibly easier to cook in a fraction of the time and use significantly less oil.

To make air fryer baked potatoes, simply season the potatoes with olive oil and scrub/ sprinkle salt.

Preheat the air fryer at 400 F. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer and cook for 40 minutes, flipping once halfway through.

When the potatoes are cooked golden brown, remove them from the air fryer.

Cut a slit, and squeeze it slightly open. Then using a fork fluff the potatoes, add your favorite toppings and serve immediately.

How long it does take to make baked potatoes in the air fryer?

The timing depends mostly on the size and type of the potatoes. The larger ones (12 ounces and more) may take 45 - 50 minutes whereas the medium ones (8 - 12 ounces) will be perfectly cooked in 30 - 35 minutes at max, cooked at 400 F (200 C). To reduce the time, nuke the potatoes for 5 minutes in the microwave. Then air fry till the skin looks golden and crisp.

Which potatoes are the best for baked potatoes?

Starchy potatoes like Russet potatoes are the best for this recipe. They turn out to be the fluffiest when cooked and also the thicker skin crisp up in a better way than other varieties. Also, you can make your baked potatoes with any other varieties like yukun gold, white potatoes, and sweet potatoes. However avoid the small baby potatoes, fingerling potatoes, new potatoes, and red potatoes since they won't be as good as the ones mentioned earlier.

Do I need to poke the potatoes for air fryer baked potatoes?

Not at all. They won't burst. We do poke the potatoes in the oven to avoid the bursting of the potatoes. But in the case of the air fryer, it cooks from all directions dehydrating them easily. So it's not necessary.

Should I wrap the potatoes in foil for air frying?

It's not necessary, some do wrap while many don't do that. However, if you want soft skin, you can wrap them. I never wrap though.
